The seventh season of High Stakes Poker will be demonstrated on GSN beginning this month, but regrettably there have been some adjustments and very few of them are excellent. The show will have a new sponsor as Gabe Kaplan who was on the first six seasons is gone. He’s being substituted by former Saturday Night Live cast member Norm MacDonald. Kara Scott will still be on the show as a co-host.
Adjustments
GSN is making some other adjustments to the show too and they don’t seem plus side either. The show will now incorporate a mixture of pros and amateur competitors. High Stakes Poker will still have some top competitors like Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan but none of the members of Full Tilt will be on the show. That means many of the top poker competitors in the world will not be on the show this season including Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Eli Elezra and Gus Hansen. The show will still have Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak however the loss of top competitors will definitely be visible. It looks like High Stakes Poker will be sponsored by PokerStars and they didn’t want competitors wearing Full Tilt attire.
Bellagio
The seventh season of High Stakes Poker was filmed at the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas. The 3-hour episodes will be demonstrated on GSN beginning this month. You can even watch the shows in 3D if you have DirecTV although I have no clue why you would want to watch poker in 3D.
Downhill
High Stakes Poker is not going to be the same. Gabe Kaplan was an terrific sponsor and was highly regarded in the poker community. He was superior in blend with A.J. Benza but he was still excellent. Norm MacDonald is a comedian who’s not a poker expert. Kara Scott was excellent in her purpose but she is not an analyst. The days of gaining insightful poker commentary appear to be over and that’s too bad. Gabe is a quite excellent poker player and understood the high stakes game. He will be missed. Now you are able to only hit the mute button because you are not going to hear anything insightful from MacDonald. The other difficulty for High Stakes Poker is the loss of all the Full Tilt competitors. Dwan made the show worth watching by himself. He will be missed as will other top Full Tilt professionals.
